"Safety in Lifting" is the
title to our training seminar that we offer to our customers who are interested
in learning useful information on the proper usage of slings (wire rope, chain,
nylon web, wire mesh, rope, etc.). It has become more popular as
OSHA’s presence in industry intensifies.
In the training class, we
offer a video presentation (approx. 20 minutes), discussion (time varies
depending on class size and number of questions asked), and a post-video test
(testing the participant’s knowledge on issues shown on video). This form of
presentation can be done either at your facility or any neutral location. The
normal session time is 45 minutes to 1 hour. The class size limit is 25
people.
A variation of the above presentation features additional
published literature that consists of a "Crane & Rigging Handbook" and a
"Rigging Reference" card. The Handbook contains information on cranes, slings,
hardware, etc. and even has some inspection data for some types of slings.
The Reference
card is foldable to wallet size and contains
working load limits on wire rope slings, and shackles. It also shows crane hand
signals, weights of materials, and more.
The third and final type
of presentation that is offered is the "Sling Inspector" training. We use the
same video and test as above, but we use OSHA 1910.184 and ANSI B30.9 to discuss
proper inspection techniques, frequency of inspection, and removal from service
criteria. This allows you the option of appointing a sling inspector for monthly
inspections. Although not required, we recommend a third-party to conduct your
annual sling inspections. As you know, this is a service that we also offer.
